Mind vs. Body

You can be physically strong as a truck, but until your mind is, too, you won't get very far. 

Because, see, your mind-- not your body-- is what's driving the ship. 


Your mind, not your body, is what's telling you you can't make it 10 more seconds, you need something sweet, you're too tired to get up, you're not strong enough to keep going. 

Your body follows your mind, and so if your mind is made up that you can or can't do something, your body follows accordingly. If your mind perceives yourself as failing, lacking, "fat" or otherwise visually unappealing, your body says, "Okay yeah, me too."

Yet here we all are (or a large majority of us at least) convinced that if we could just change our bodies, our lives would be the way we wanted them to be.

In fact, to change your body, you need to first change your mind.

I don't know who said it, but I read once, "Your mind must arrive at your destination before your life does," and that's stuck with me, both in life & in fitness. 

Your present thoughts dictate your future reality. Your mind is driving the ship. 

Change your mind, change your life.

Here are 5 ways to change your mind so you can, in turn, change your body:

1. Positive Self Talk

No more:
"Easy for you to say, you're skinny!"
"My fat self can't do that!"
"Once I lose these love handles I'll do it!"
"I wish I could wear that but I don't have the arms for it."

Or anything of the like. It serves absolutely no purpose besides anchoring you even harder to where you are.

2. Journaling

You'll be amazed what 5 minutes a day of just writing how you feel, what's working, what's not working, what you plan to do differently, etc. can change your mindset! This is seriously too easy not to at least try. 

3. Reading/Exposure

Changing your mind is not a one-time thing. You need repeated exposure to positivity & unique ways of thinking. Reading, whether that's a blog, an article, a chapter of a book, or even just a quote EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. is like a mental workout. But just like with your body, you can't just workout once & expect results. You've gotta stay consistent. Keep reading. Stay exposed to good stuff. 

4. Asking Questions

When we isolate ourselves from support, help & guidance, we fool ourselves into believing we're on this journey alone. And when we hit a wall & think we're alone, we want to quit. ASK. QUESTIONS. Reach out! "Hey what's a good afternoon snack?" "Excuse me, could you show me how to use this machine?" "Hey, I don't know how to cook this. Do you have any suggestions?" 

You're not alone, and you're not supposed to be. 

5. Live In The Gain (not the gap)

I've talked about this before, but you've got to switch your brain to THE GAIN mode and get out of THE GAP. In THE GAIN, we see how far we've come & we measure our progress based on where we were compared to where we are. 

In THE GAP, we are constantly looking forward at where we're not, and therefore feeling discouraged by our "lack of progress." Get out of THE GAP. It's not good for your head.
