Is Protein Powder Necessary For Your Fitness Goals?

So far, all of my personal training clients are women, and with no exception, all of them have asked me in some form or another (but usually like this) “So do I need to drink like, protein shakes?”

Like, protein shakes are, like, totally helpful and all, but you don’t need them.

Here’s the 411:

  • Muscle is a highly effective tool for burning fat.
  • You build muscle through damaging and then repairing your muscle fibers.
  • Those fibers are repaired with the help of protein, which, as the name suggests, can be found in protein shakes.

Is that the only effective protein source? By far, NO.
Is it quick, tasty and effective? Totally.

Generally speaking, protein shakes are a low carb, low calorie, high protein source (depending on what kind you buy) making them excellent post-workout meals or snacks during the day.

Protein powder is also so freakin’ versatile. You can blend it into a fruit smoothie, mix it with less water than usual and use it like peanut butter, mix it with eggs and milk for pancakes, and so much more.

So, no, you don’t need to buy protein powder if you’re trying to get in shape, lose weight or gain muscle, but it’s a really great tool that contributes to all 3 of those processes!

Here are my top 3 protein powders (in no particular order because it'd be too stressful to choose) with a tasty tip for each one!

  1. Quest Peanut Butter (available at Winn Dixie/most Wal-Marts)

-This one mixes super smooth, so I like to add cinnamon and juuuust enough water to give it a peanut butter consistency & then use it as a dip for fruit or spread it on toast!

  2. Dymatize Elite Whey Chocolate Cake Batter

-The above technique definitely works here, too, but with this one, I like to make strawberry chocolate post-workout smoothies or have these late night for sweet tooth cravings.

  3. PE Science Cookies & Cream

-Two words: ice. cream. Mix a scoop of this baby with some cashew milk (or cashew/almond blend- I find the "nut" milks to make better ice cream consistency) and a ton of ice and you've got delicious, protein packed ice cream!

Hope this answers some of your protein questions and gives you some new ideas of how to incorporate protein powder into your diet!
