Observation vs. Evaluation

Observation: “She’s wearing something I wouldn’t wear.”

Evaluation: “She looks bad in that outfit.”

Observation: “He does that differently than I do it.”

Evaluation: “He does that wrong.”

Observation: “This is difficult for me.”

Evaluation: “I am bad at this.”

The problem with evaluating things rather than simply observing them is where we go next.

To what great place does evaluation take us?

When we navigate the world with score-sheet in hand, holding everyone else up against ourselves & deciding who passes & who fails, who’s right & who’s wrong, who’s better & who’s worse— where do we end up?

Is it somewhere we want to be?

Try to become more aware of when you are evaluating instead of observing.

I think you’ll be surprised to find how often you do it & how unproductive it can be.
