The Golden Rule

We are raised on "The Golden Rule." It was taught to me in some of my earliest schooldays, and I bet you can remember learning it, too:

"Treat others how you want to be treated."

Now, many, many years and experiences later, I still appreciate the intent, but I have a different golden rule:

"Treat others how they want to be treated."

It's harder.

It asks us to consider someone else's story, someone else's needs & wishes, not just our own. But I think that's what people really want: to be treated the way they want to be treated.

Of course, the original golden rule is a nice place to start, but if you've got the courage, the second version of the rule is where human to human connection really happens.
